The origins: The Maubreil estate
The history of Château de Maubreuil dates back to the 14th century, when Guillaume de Couppegorge became Lord of Maubreil in 1398. At this time, the estate began to establish itself under the aegis of the Couppegorge family, a noble line of great influence. Guillaume, followed by Alain, François and Bertrand de Couppegorge, continued the family tradition by strengthening their authority and extending their holdings.
In 1575, Marguerite de Couppegorge married Arthur Ménardeau, merging the fortunes and lands of the two influential families. Michel Ménardeau, a descendant of this union, founded a chapel dedicated to Sainte Anne in 1671, adding a religious dimension to the estate. This foundation symbolised the family's devotion and their desire to leave a lasting imprint on the land, marking a new era in the development of Maubreil.
The renaissance: the transition to Maubreuil
Before the French Revolution, the estate was known as ‘Maubreil’. However, the tumult of the Revolution brought significant changes, and the name evolved into ‘Maubreuil’. This name change reflected the changing social and political context of the time, as well as a desire to modernise and adapt to new post-Revolutionary standards.
The estate underwent major changes during this period. The repercussions of the Revolution led to the partial destruction of the old château, but some original structures remained, such as the dovecote and the private chapel. Today, these vestiges of the past have been transformed to serve the castle's new needs. The chapel has been refurbished and now houses the hotel's cellar, while the dovecote has been transformed into a Privilege suite, known as ‘A Thousand and One Nights’, offering visitors a stay steeped in charm and history.
The revival: the reconstruction of the château and the Marquis de Dion
The château we know today was built in 1815 by Félix Cossin, a merchant and shipowner from Nantes. He rebuilt the estate on the ruins of an old building burnt down during the French Revolution. The new château embodies the elegance and grandeur of the period, with remarkable architectural features that reflect the style and opulence of the period.
One of the estate's most notable owners was Jules-Albert de Dion, Marquis de Dion. Born in Nantes in 1856, Jules-Albert de Dion was a true automotive pioneer and founder of the famous De Dion-Bouton brand. A visionary and daring industrialist, he took part in the first motorised race in history and played a crucial role in the birth of the Tour de France. His contribution to the motor industry and cycling is immense, and his legacy lives on to this day. As a tribute to his lasting influence, the château's restaurant is named ‘La Table du Marquis’, celebrating the innovative spirit and excellence that define the estate.
A new era: From medicine to luxury
In 1934, the Marquis de Dion sold the estate to the département, marking a new era for Maubreuil. The estate was transformed for medical purposes. In 1938, a sanatorium was built in the grounds to treat patients suffering from respiratory diseases. This institution became a recognised health centre, integrating the château's historic buildings with new, modern structures.
In 1972, the sanatorium evolved into a functional rehabilitation centre, offering rehabilitation services for a variety of patients. This transformation maintained the estate's medical use, while respecting its charming historic setting.
Modernisation: Restoration and transformation into a 5-star hotel
In 2013, a steering committee decided to sell the château and its outbuildings to the Astrolade company. The estate was then acquired by Philippe Rousse, an entrepreneur from Nantes. He undertook a meticulous seven-year restoration to transform the château into a five-star hotel, which opened on 12 December 2019. Château de Maubreuil now boasts fourteen suites, three flats, a Cinq Mondes partner Spa and a gourmet restaurant, ‘La Table du Marquis’.
