Discover our Basse Cour: an ode to sustainability and coexistence with nature.
At Château de Maubreuil, our commitment to sustainability and the preservation of nature comes to life in unexpected places. One of the jewels of our ecological approach is our remarkable henhouse in the Basse Cour. Designed to transcend the simple notion of waste management, our henhouse embodies our profound belief in the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.
Our precious feathered residents are not just passive spectators in this process. Geese, ducks, peacocks and hens from all walks of life are actively contributing to our quest for sustainability. Thanks to their insatiable appetite for food scraps, these ecological companions become important links in our circular food chain. They are pampered with these delicacies, transforming leftovers into a valuable resource rather than waste. This innovative solution has enabled us to reduce our food waste by almost 70%, the only untreated waste being that from meat products.
Our aviary, spanning almost 300 square meters, is much more than just a shelter for our feathered friends. Inspired by the principles of the capital, it rises elegantly from a remarkable central mas. This architectural element has its origins in a majestic cedar that fell during a storm, uniting the beauty of nature with our desire for sustainability.
Our Lower Courtyard is home to a variety of species that coexist in harmony. Recently, we welcomed two adorable peacocks, adding even more diversity to our community. In addition to their crucial environmental role, our little residents add a touch of color to our daily lives, not least thanks to the varied palette of colorful eggs they produce.
Hen eggs vary in color according to breed. Breeds such as the Poule Suissesse, Poule de Soie and Poule de Pékin produce white eggs, while the Marans produces dark brown eggs. The Araucana and Azur, exotic breeds, produce eggs in shades of green and blue. Each color reflects the rich diversity of our hens and adds a unique visual touch to our meals.
At Château de Maubreuil, our Basse Cour is more than just a space; it's a declaration of love for nature, sustainability and biodiversity.
