The bicentenary trees of Maubreuil
September heralds the return of autumn, colouring the grounds of the Château de Maubreuil with warm and flamboyant hues. At the dawn of this new season, some of the majestic trees that adorn the 8 hectares of greenery of our hotel located a stone's throw from Nantes, offer us a daily parade of their shimmering colours. But who are these trees, remarkable for their age-old longevity?
Nantes, known for being the first port in Europe and the first nursery port in France during the slave trade, was the main supplier of exotic tree species for many châteaux in the Loire Valley. In the 16th century, these exotic plants were destined for Marie de Médicis and the court in Paris. Then, under the reign of Louis XIV, these new varieties arrived in Nantes and left for Versailles. But the people of Nantes always kept cuttings of them.
This mecca of horticultural imports for 300 years, renowned for the talent of its acclimatising gardeners, attracted wealthy squires to its market and plant fairs, enabling them to follow the trends at the court of Versailles.
In the park of the Château de Maubreuil, you can admire a North American sequoia and a bald cypress, probably planted at the end of the 19th century, near the pond. A 200 year old pine from the Middle East and a cedar from Lebanon welcome you at the entrance of the castle. Endemic species also adorn the green setting of the estate, the oak tree, well known in our regions, is very present at Maubreuil, as are chestnut trees aged between 150 and 200 years. Hornbeams also border our outdoor swimming pools.
We find these species on the other side of the motorway, which indicates that historically the original forest of the Château de Maubreuil was much larger than it is today.
