The Bamiléké couple from Cameroon, a symbol of royalty at the Château de Maubreuil
At the Château de Maubreuil, no one is unaware that many works of art have taken possession of the premises. They have become the signature of the House and house fascinating cultural stories. Coming from Cameroon, this sculpture, represented as a duo, is meant to pay tribute to the Bamiléké people and their history. Located in western Cameroon, in the middle of the savannah, the Bamileke people represent an ethnic population of seven hundred thousand people, known primarily for their rich spirituality, strong group cohesion and female dominance. The Bamilekes live in numerous caves, also called kingdoms, where many rites, offerings and ceremonies take place. The religion of the Bamilekes is centered on the veneration of the relics of the ancestors where they consider that contact with the skull of a deceased person allows them to spiritually contact the dead. For this African people, it is essential to care for the human skulls of the dead in order to avoid the wrath of the spirits, illness, infertility and death.
During each ceremony, the Bamilekes create commemorative figures according to the community to which they belong and its traditions. Although each kingdom has its own rituals, Bamileke art is essentially represented by beadwork. Bamileke masks and statuettes are easily recognizable by the colored glass beads they are covered with. This tradition comes from the time when the village chiefs traded with the Venetians, who brought Murano glass beads as currency.
Among the Bamilekes, as in other ethnic groups, art objects reflect the place of their owner in society. Thus, the materials and forms of the objects vary according to social status. The complexity of the beaded decorations makes it possible to evaluate the value of the object and the power of the person for whom it was made.
In the Château de Maubreuil, the 140 cm sculpture represents an ancestral couple of the Bamileke people and has as its symbol: royalty. Carved in wood, the sculpture of the Bamileke couple has been covered with a raffia cloth on which are sewn brightly colored beads.
